jaag piyari

jaag piyari ab kya sovae, raen gai din kaahe ko khovae

jin jaaga tinn maanik paaya, bauri sab soye gavaaya;

piya tere chatur tu moorakh nari, kabahun na piya ki sej sanwaari

tein bauri bauraapan keenhon, bhar joban piya apan na cheenhon;

jaag dekh piya sej na tere, tahi chhaadi uthi gaye savere

kahae kabir soi dhan jaage, sabad baan urr antar laagae.

my translation in verse-

wake up my slumbering self awake,

the night hath pass't, why pass the day

like a precious jewel the awakened ones shall behold the day ,

the ignorant shall it all lose slumbering;

While thee a fool thine beloved is clever

for never in time* did you sit by HIS side

in thine ignorance thee behaved ignorant

you never made HIM your own intoxicated by youth;

Awake, look thine beloved ain't in your chamber any more

leaving you asleep he woke up in the morning

Says Kabir only those shall wake up

Who gets pierced by the arrows of these Words.
